#3 Tozan's own teaching methods established|The founder of Tozan-ryu Shakuhachi, Tozan Nakao

Tozan's own teaching methods established

After Tozan published a self-study book " Explanation about Tozan-ryu Shakuhachi musical notes(都山流尺八音符解説)", the number of shakuhachi enthusiasts increased rapidly throughout the country.

His class room became too small, so he built a special class room and taught many disciples. Students were given diplomas based on an examination system, and a system of teacher and associate teacher were established.

Organized concert tours in Russia and Europe

When The World War I began in 1914, he planned to visit Russian wounded soldiers. Together with a koto player, he traveled to Moscow and Leningrad, the capital at that time, in July 1915, and visiting hospitals in various places and gave concerts.

Sponsored by the Japanese Embassy, he held a Sankyoku(三曲)concert of traditional Japanese music and introduced the correct Sankyoku to Europe.

(※Sankyoku is a form of Japanese chamber music played often with a vocal accompaniment. It is traditionally played on shamisen, koto, and kokyu, but more recently the kokyu has been replaced by shakuhachi.)

As the number of students increased and reached tens of thousands nationwide, it became necessary to renew the management organization. For this reason, a councilor system was established to allow those with a long career to participate in the management of the school.

In this way, the Tozan-ryu was formed.
