A Beginner's Guide to Playing the Shakuhachi: Basic Notes Ro-Tsu-Re-Chi-Ha

Shakuhachi master Kaizan Harago explains the basic notes, focusing on the fundamental scale. In the Tozan school, this is referred to as "Ro-Tsu-Re-Chi-Ha," while in the Kinko school, it’s called "Ro-Tsu-Re-Chi-Ri." Let’s break it down step by step.

The Basics of Shakuhachi Notes

To begin, start with all the finger holes covered—this is the note "Ro." From there, gradually uncover the holes as follows:

  1. Open the bottom hole → "Tsu"
  2. Open the next hole → "Re"
  3. Open one more hole → "Chi"
  4. Open the 3 and 4 holes and cover the bottom two holes again → "Ha"

Throughout this process, the thumb hole on the back remains covered at all times.

Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them

If you focus too hard on reading the notes, you might unintentionally say "Ro-Tsu-Re-Chi-Ha" without realizing it. This could cause your mouth shape to change, making it difficult to produce the correct sound

Tips for Effective Practice

If you’re struggling to produce sound, here are a few tips:

  • Keep your blowing technique consistent and focus on moving only your fingers.
  • Imagine you’re playing "Ro" the entire time and simply adjust your fingers as needed.

By following this approach, you’ll find it easier to play each note smoothly.

Learning the shakuhachi can feel challenging at first, but you'll improve steadily with regular practice and patience. Take your time, enjoy the process, and embrace the journey of mastering this beautiful instrument!
