A Beginner’s Guide to Playing the Shakuhachi: How to Blow

Shakuhachi master Kaizan Harago will teach you the tips for blowing.

Starting with the shakuhachi can be challenging, so it's a good idea to focus on making sound without worrying about covering the finger holes first.

Begin by practicing making sound without involving your fingers. First, hold the shakuhachi as shown in the photo below.

Lightly close your lips so that a natural line forms where your upper and lower lips meet. Place the sharp edge of the Utakuchi (mouthpiece) on this line, touching it gently with your lips. It's okay to hold it with your lips.

Make sure the shakuhachi rests against your chin. Using your chin as a pivot, slowly lower the bottom of the shakuhachi in a smooth, circular motion. Lower it to about a 45-degree angle. This motion naturally creates a small gap between your lips and the mouthpiece.

Once this gap is formed, slightly open your mouth and breathe in naturally. Relax and let your breath flow gently through the gap as you exhale. Avoid blowing too hard or forcing your mouth into a tense position, as this will make it difficult to produce a sound. Instead, imagine that you are softly exhaling, and you should begin to hear a tone.

Good luck, and happy playing!
